Forum for an alternative Belfast

August 2009

In collaboration with Catalyst Arts, the Forum brought the second Belfast Sandcastles to a former newpaper warehouse on Donegall Street.

Urban sandcastles illustrated a few themes: firstly making active use of our vacant buildings and secondly the realisation that we need multiple activities in the city.

Another theme was taking over space.

In Germany a common feature of life is the street festival, which is both for play and transforming urban space. It is important that Belfast citizens start to realise the city is theirs and that they must repossess its streets for real civic life.

Sandcastles were subject to a number of special tests: the water spray test and the motte test. Castles were awarded prizes for the most inventive; the most practical; the most landscaped; and subsequently every castle explored different themes.
